Delegates from the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers (IAM) across Alabama gathered in Montgomery for the Alabama State Council meeting, according to an April 7 announcement. The event brought together more than 45 participants to discuss legislative priorities, union solidarity, and actions affecting working families.
The meeting aimed to strengthen the voice of working people in decision-making processes that impact their lives. Attendees addressed topics such as defending union rights, challenging corporate power, protecting retirement security, supporting veterans, and encouraging civic engagement. Elected officials and candidates from various political backgrounds also spoke at the event, pledging support for pro-worker legislation.
Craig Martin, IAM Southern Territory General Vice President, said: “This is about making sure working people have a voice in the decisions that affect their lives. We’re fighting back against corporate power and pushing for policies that put workers first because when working families advance, our communities advance.”
Hasan Solomon, IAM Political and Legislative Director, highlighted member involvement in politics by saying: “Being politically engaged isn’t optional – it’s essential. The decisions being made at every level of government directly impact our union, our jobs, our rights, and our futures. When IAM members show up, they listen.” Delegates put this message into practice by spending a day at the Alabama State Capitol lobbying lawmakers for worker-friendly policies.
Rickie Langford, IAM Alabama State Council President said: “This meeting shows the power of bringing members together with a shared purpose. When we unite, educate, and take action we can move the needle for working people across Alabama.”
A key milestone was reached during Executive Board elections with Michelle Hunt of IAM Local 2003 becoming the council’s first woman president. Hunt said: “I’m honored to be elected and to serve alongside such dedicated members. I’m committed to continuing the work of pushing forward an agenda that puts working people first and strengthens our union across Alabama.” Other officers elected include Secretary-Treasurer Marc Johnson (IAM Local 2003), Vice Presidents Duane Williams (South), Anthony Holton (South), Rickie Langford (North), and James Tate (North).
The council reaffirmed its commitment to empowering workers through education and advocacy both within workplaces and at governmental levels.
