For many years, Dr. Thomas Abney was a notable presence at the Medical College of Georgia (MCG) at Augusta University, known for making scientific research accessible and enjoyable for his students. His approach to teaching and mentorship has influenced numerous professionals in medicine, research, and education.

Dr. Abney passed away in 2024. In his memory, his wife Eugenie (Jeanie) Abney established the Dr. Thomas O. Abney Memorial Physiology Scholarship to support graduate students who have financial need and show promise in physiology research. The scholarship aims to continue Dr. Abney’s commitment to advancing the field of physiology by helping students focus on their studies and research.

“He made science fun,” said Jeanie Abney. “He believed it was serious work and was always very thorough and organized, but he wanted his students to enjoy science.”

Dr. Abney’s academic journey began with an early interest in chemistry during high school, which led him to earn a PhD in biochemistry from the University of Georgia and complete postdoctoral work at the University of Texas at Austin. He later joined MCG as a faculty member in endocrinology before the department merged with physiology.

His research focused on reproductive endocrinology, particularly how reproductive organs develop before birth and the roles of specific cells and genes in this process. Dr. Abney’s ability to explain complex topics clearly helped foster curiosity among his trainees.

Among those he mentored is Brooks A. Keel, former president of Augusta University, who maintained contact with Dr. Abney throughout his career.

“Brooks often commented that he and the other students had so much fun working with Tom,” Jeanie said. “He recalled following the sound of laughter to find his way to the lab.”

In addition to his research and teaching roles, Dr. Abney advocated for graduate students by founding Graduate Student Research Day at MCG—a tradition that has grown over four decades into one of Augusta University’s largest annual research events.

“He said, ‘You know, this would be a good way for the faculty to see what the students know,’” Jeanie recalled.

After retiring as professor emeritus, Dr. Abney remained involved with Augusta University through leadership roles in its retiree association.

Jennifer Sullivan, dean of The Graduate School at Augusta University, emphasized the significance of the new scholarship: “The Thomas O. Abney Memorial Physiology Scholarship represents more than financial support — it represents a legacy of excellence in physiology and a commitment to training the next generation of physiologists,” she said. “By easing financial burdens, this scholarship allows our graduate students to fully immerse themselves in rigorous scientific inquiry, pursue bold ideas and contribute meaningfully to the field of physiology. We are extremely grateful to the Abney family for this impactful gift.”

Jeanie Abney hopes that recipients will carry forward her husband’s values: dedication to science combined with enjoyment in discovery.

“I want them to get their PhDs, and I want to see their impact in my lifetime,” she said.

Through this scholarship fund, Dr. Thomas Abney’s influence continues as future researchers benefit from both financial assistance and inspiration drawn from his legacy.
