Augusta University marked International Mother Language Day with an event organized by the Bangladeshi Student Association on February 21 at the Jaguar Student Activities Center. The day, which promotes linguistic and cultural diversity, was first proclaimed by UNESCO in 1999 after an initiative from Bangladesh and later recognized by the United Nations General Assembly in 2002.
The campus celebration included a cultural showcase, open performances, and displays of traditional dress. Students representing seven countries—Bangladesh, India, Afghanistan, Nepal, Iran, Nigeria, and the United States—participated as presenters for languages such as Bengali, Hindi, English, Urdu, Pashto, Nepali, Persian, and Yoruba. More than 70 people attended the event.
Subrata Mandal Suman, president of Augusta University’s Bangladeshi Student Association and a PhD student in biostatistics said: “This event was a genuine celebration of unity, reminding us that language is far more than words – it embodies identity, heritage and the spirit of a people. We extend our heartfelt gratitude to all participants for their enthusiasm, dedication and rich cultural contributions.”
Shaheen Islam MD serves as faculty advisor to the association and is division chief and professor in AU’s Medical College of Georgia. Islam stated: “This event provided an opportunity for us to learn from each other and appreciate the diverse tapestry of languages that connects us. I am truly grateful to experience and celebrate the vibrant diversity that exists at Augusta University.”
The International Mother Language Day observance on campus aimed to encourage appreciation for linguistic heritage among students from various backgrounds.
