Canton and Suwanee have been named Georgia Exceptional Main Street (GEMS) communities by the Georgia Main Street Program, which operates under the Georgia Department of Community Affairs. This designation places them among a select group of cities recognized for effective downtown revitalization and economic development.
The GEMS designation is given to cities that demonstrate success in using the Main Street Approach, a strategy focused on preserving local character while supporting economic growth. Canton and Suwanee were recognized for their efforts in developing downtown areas that act as key economic and cultural centers in their regions.
Suwanee has become known for its active public spaces and innovative planning, while Canton has made progress in supporting small businesses and organizing community events. Both cities were acknowledged for their leadership in creating resilient downtowns.
“These cities have shown what’s possible when local leadership, community engagement, and strategic planning come together,” said Cherie Bennett, Director of the Office of Downtown Development at the Georgia Department of Community Affairs. “We are proud to welcome Canton and Suwanee into the GEMS family and look forward to the continued impact they will make across the state.”
GEMS communities are considered top examples within Georgia’s Main Street programs, meeting high standards and helping guide other cities interested in preservation-based economic development.
