The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) has announced the formation of the Office of Science Advisory Committee (SCAC), a new advisory body designed to provide independent advice on scientific and technical issues for the Department’s Office of Science.
This move is part of the DOE’s efforts to implement President Trump’s Executive Order focused on restoring high standards in federal research, emphasizing collaboration, transparency, and evidence-based decision-making to strengthen public trust in science. The SCAC is intended to offer expert input that will inform priorities, improve coordination, and address broad research challenges across the Office of Science.
“The establishment of SCAC underscores the Department’s commitment to scientific integrity and the power of partnership,” said DOE Under Secretary for Science Darío Gil. “By bringing together leading minds from diverse institutions, we’re forging a collaborative framework that will not only enhance our scientific endeavors but also accelerate the translation of fundamental research into tangible benefits for the American people. This committee exemplifies how shared vision and collective expertise are essential for navigating the complex scientific landscape of today and tomorrow.”
Under Secretary Gil appointed members representing a wide range of expertise from academia, industry, science philanthropy, and national laboratories. The committee aims to help adapt to evolving research demands and address interdisciplinary issues efficiently. It will also advise on major initiatives such as the Genesis Mission, scientific discovery projects, fusion energy development, and advancements in quantum science.
Persis Drell—professor at Stanford University with previous leadership roles at both Stanford and SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory—will serve as chair of SCAC.
SCAC will take over responsibilities previously managed by six separate discretionary advisory committees within the Office of Science. This consolidation is intended to streamline operations by providing a single coordinated source for independent expert advice.
