The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) has announced investments totaling more than $320 million to advance artificial intelligence (AI) initiatives as part of the Genesis Mission. The funding supports the development of AI capabilities aimed at increasing the productivity and impact of American science and engineering over the next decade.

According to DOE Under Secretary for Science Darío Gil, “Thanks to President Trump’s Working Families Tax Cut, the Department of Energy is proud to advance AI investments to ensure American technological leadership and accelerate scientific discovery. By investing in the American Science Cloud and the Transformational AI Model Consortium we are creating the foundational technologies and AI-ready data sets that will enable the success of the Genesis Mission.”

The investment will fund four main initiatives:

– The American Science Cloud (AmSC), which will serve as a platform infrastructure for hosting and distributing AI models and scientific data. This resource aims to provide access for national laboratories, industry, and research partners to DOE’s collection of scientific data.
– The Transformational AI Models Consortium (ModCon), which focuses on developing self-improving AI models that can be applied across various scientific, engineering, and energy fields by leveraging DOE’s unique datasets and expertise.
– Fourteen projects in robotics and automation designed to support automated laboratories and autonomous control systems for large-scale experiments. These projects seek to enhance laboratory environments with intelligent systems using advanced automation technology.
– Thirty-seven foundational AI awards that aim to curate large amounts of existing data while developing robust AI models through experimental insights combined with theoretical understanding. These efforts are intended to help AI systems analyze extensive datasets from experiments, simulations, or observational studies in order to generate new insights or drive autonomous research.

Further details about specific projects funded under this initiative can be found on the Genesis Mission website.
