Approximately 56 workers at Discovery World, a science museum in Milwaukee, have voted to join the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers (IAM Union). This decision follows a campaign by employees seeking better pay, clearer opportunities for advancement, and a stronger voice in workplace matters.

Adante Balke, IAM Midwest Territory Special Representative, commented on the outcome: “Congratulations to the Discovery World workers on making their voices heard and officially winning their union election. These dedicated employees are coming together to demand respect, fair wages, better benefits, and greater transparency in promotions and hiring. By standing united, they are now preparing to bargain collectively for a stronger future.”

With the vote concluded, the new union members plan to negotiate their first contract. Their goals include improving wages and benefits, increasing career opportunities, and ensuring that workplace concerns can be raised without fear of retaliation. The collective bargaining process is intended to give them a protected way to participate in decisions affecting their employment.

During the organizing period, some Discovery World employees reported issues with management’s response. Concerns included alleged anti-union actions aimed at discouraging staff from forming a union and the firing of an employee who was an active supporter of unionization.

Discovery World staff play an important role in supporting the museum’s educational programs and exhibits. Their work contributes directly to the experiences of families, students, and visitors at the museum.

IAM Midwest Territory General Vice President Sam Cicinelli expressed appreciation for local government support: “The IAM Union is proud to welcome these workers into the IAM family. We would like to give special thanks to Milwaukee Common Council Members Alderman Alex Brower, Alderwoman Marina Dimitrijevic, Alderperson JoCasta Zamarripa, and Alderman Robert J. Bauman for standing in solidarity with Discovery World workers and supporting their right to organize. We stand ready to support them as they move toward a strong first contract that reflects their value, protects their rights, and ensures Discovery World remains a place where workers and the community can thrive together.”

The IAM Union represents about 600,000 active and retired members across several industries throughout North America.
