The Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) is now open for the 2026-27 award year, with a priority deadline of May 1, according to an announcement on Mar. 26. The application is used to determine eligibility for federal and state financial aid, and recent updates from the FAFSA Simplification Act continue to make the process more efficient.

Meeting the May 1 priority deadline is important because it gives students the best chance to receive the maximum amount of financial aid available. Students who submit their FAFSA by this date can expect to receive their financial aid offers by early summer, typically within a few weeks after the deadline.

Kyle Parsons, director of Student Financial Aid, said that many issues related to previous changes have been resolved. “When we went through FAFSA simplification, there were a lot of changes but many of those issues have been smoothed out, and we’re continuing to see a very efficient process with a much more expedited approach compared to what we had a couple of years ago,” Parsons said. He also noted improvements in how income information is handled: “Because the income information now transfers directly from the IRS, it really streamlines the process and makes it more efficient for students and their families completing the income portion.”

Parsons advised students to use their correct home address on applications—especially if they have recently moved—and keep track of login credentials. He also stressed that dependent students should coordinate with parents or guardians when filling out forms since parental consent is required for transferring financial information.

“There are several funds available for students, but the amount of funding is limited, and we want to ensure all students who have applied for the FAFSA are considered before those funds are depleted,” Parsons said. “Students who submit their FAFSA by the priority deadline will receive full consideration for some of our limited funding.”

Parsons also recommended that applicants review recent changes in types of financial aid being offered as well as Augusta University’s course program of study policy. Students needing help can schedule appointments—either in-person or online—with Augusta University’s Office of Student Financial Aid during regular business hours.
