Georgia Power announced on Mar. 24 the completion of its largest set of distributed generation solar power purchase agreements to date, following recent approval from the Georgia Public Service Commission. The company awarded final contracts for 16 new projects totaling 70 megawatts of third-party solar as part of its 2024 distributed generation request for proposals. These contracts build on an additional 12 agreements completed in 2024, which added another 41 megawatts to the system.
This development is significant as it marks more than 110 megawatts of new distributed generation solar coming online, representing the largest such procurement in Georgia Power’s history. The program was originally proposed by Georgia Power and approved by the Public Service Commission under the company’s 2022 Integrated Resource Plan.
“Georgia continues to grow and experience an increased demand for electricity, driven by a strong economy and robust economic development activities. This milestone underscores how distributed generation solar is helping us deliver clean and reliable energy for our customers through effective long-term planning with the Georgia PSC,” said Rick Anderson, senior vice president and senior production officer for Georgia Power. “By working with solar developers across the state, we’re expanding access to cost-effective renewable resources while strengthening Georgia’s energy infrastructure, maintaining reliability and keeping energy affordable for millions of Georgians.”
Under these initiatives, third-party developers construct and maintain solar facilities while Georgia Power purchases all renewable energy produced through long-term power purchase agreements ranging from projects sized at 250 kilowatts up to six megawatts. This approach supports clean energy growth while allowing flexibility as market conditions change.
Looking ahead, Georgia Power plans to seek over an additional 100 megawatts of distributed generation solar over two years via two further requests for proposals scheduled for release in 2026 and 2027 under its forthcoming Integrated Resource Plan. These projects are expected to be operational by 2028.
The company reports that it currently has more than 4,900 megawatts of renewable resources online with another approximately 5,100 megawatts under development. By expanding both large-scale renewables and customer programs like Simple Solar or community-based options detailed on its website, Georgia Power aims to increase its renewable portfolio to about ten thousand megawatts by year-end 2032.
