Georgia Power has introduced SmartValve technology in partnership with Smart Wires to address the increasing energy needs of customers in the Atlanta metro area. The new system, described as advanced power flow control technology, is intended to help maintain reliable and affordable electricity by improving how power moves through the electric grid.

SmartValve works by redirecting electricity along different routes in real time, similar to how a traffic signal manages vehicles. This approach aims to ease pressure on existing infrastructure and make better use of current power lines. The project marks Georgia Power’s first large-scale use of this technology, involving 21 SmartValve modules installed across two high-voltage circuits. These devices are designed to direct electricity where it is most needed and offer greater flexibility for adapting to changes in demand.

“Georgia Power is constantly looking for ways to better serve our customers with reliable, affordable power as we build the future of energy through this remarkable period of growth in our state,” said Michael Robinson, Georgia Power Vice President of Grid Transformation. “SmartValve presents an innovative solution to provide new benefits for our customers.”

The deployment also sets the stage for wider adoption of grid-enhancing technologies throughout Georgia Power’s network. According to company representatives, these efforts are important for creating a more adaptable grid that can support various energy initiatives and improve responses during storms or periods of economic expansion.

“Our partnership with Georgia Power highlights the real-world impact of advanced power flow control technologies,” said Joanna Lohkamp, CEO of Smart Wires. “By maximizing the full potential of existing infrastructure, we’re ensuring reliable, cost-effective energy delivery – not just for today, but for the future.”

Georgia Power plans further installations of SmartValve technology at another facility expected to be operational by summer 2028.
