Georgia Power and the Atlanta Falcons have launched a joint project to install a Distributed Energy Resource (DER) backup power resiliency system at the Falcons’ Flowery Branch campus. The system uses technology from PowerSecure and is designed to improve energy reliability for both the team’s training facilities and the nearby Emory Orthopaedic Center.
This DER installation marks the first enrollment in Georgia Power’s DER Customer Owned (DCO) program, making it a unique initiative within the company’s Resiliency Programs. The new system aims to provide backup power for critical operations at Flowery Branch while also supporting broader efforts by Georgia Power to enhance grid reliability in the surrounding community.
“This project reflects our commitment to preparedness, innovation, and being a responsible community partner,” said Spencer Treadwell, senior vice president, operations and special projects for the Atlanta Falcons. “By working with Georgia Power to maximize the value of our campus resiliency solution at Flowery Branch, we are protecting our operations and neighboring medical facilities while also helping advance solutions that strengthen the electric grid for customers across our community.”
Latanza Adjei, senior vice president of customer experience at Georgia Power, commented on the partnership: “We appreciate the Atlanta Falcons’ leadership and partnership on this project. Load flexibility and dispatchable DER help Georgia Power provide reliable, affordable power for all customers, and projects like this show how customer-sited resiliency solutions can strengthen the entire grid.”
Georgia Power has maintained a longstanding relationship with both the Atlanta Falcons and AMB Sports and Entertainment through various initiatives focused on operational efficiency, sustainability, and community engagement. This recent collaboration further demonstrates how advanced energy technologies can benefit not only individual organizations but also local communities.
