Georgia Power is preparing to respond to potential damage and power outages as Winter Storm Fern approaches Georgia. The storm is expected to bring significant snow, ice, winds, and subfreezing temperatures over the weekend. More than 10,000 personnel from Georgia Power, contracting companies, and partner utilities from Florida and other states are ready to support restoration efforts.

The forecast calls for freezing rain and subfreezing temperatures that could cause power outages. Ice accumulation on tree branches increases the risk of branches snapping and falling onto power lines. Even small amounts of ice can lead to damage, with greater risks as ice accumulates. Wind may also contribute to trees and limbs falling onto power lines.

Georgia Power has been monitoring the weather for nearly a week as storm predictions have changed. In preparation, crews are being relocated near areas where damage is likely so they can respond quickly and safely once conditions allow. After the storm passes, teams will assess damages, assign resources, clear vegetation, and make repairs. Crews are prepared to work continuously until power is restored.

The company advises customers to be prepared for possible extended outages if the storm causes significant damage or makes roads impassable or icy. Customers are encouraged to follow emergency management guidance and prioritize safety.

– Outage Map: An interactive map provides near real-time updates on outages across the state.
– Mobile App: The Georgia Power app for Apple and Android devices gives access to storm information.
– Social Media: Updates are available by following @GeorgiaPower on X (Twitter).

Safety reminders include developing a family plan, supporting those who may need help during an outage, building an emergency kit with essential supplies, using portable generators according to manufacturer instructions in well-ventilated areas only, watching out for utility crews on the roadways during hazardous conditions, never touching downed wires or removing tree limbs from power lines yourself, and calling 911 or Georgia Power immediately if you see fallen or low-hanging wires.

In anticipation of Winter Storm Fern’s impact, Georgia Power will suspend disconnections for non-payment for all commercial and residential customers starting Friday, Jan. 23 through Thursday, Jan. 29.

The company also encourages energy conservation during periods of extreme cold as extended subfreezing temperatures can increase energy use. Tips for reducing energy consumption are available at www.GeorgiaPower.com/Save.

“Crews are prepared to work around the clock to restore power for customers safely and as quickly as possible.”
