Heavy equipment operators and administrative staff working for Akima at Joint Base Lewis-McChord in Washington state have voted to join the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers (IAM) Union, according to a Mar. 10 announcement. The group of 10 workers will now begin the process of negotiating their first union contract.

The decision is significant as it gives these employees a collective voice on workplace issues such as fair treatment, job protections, and wages. Organizing efforts were led by IAM District W24 Business Representative and Organizer Aubria Hopes, who said, “From the very beginning, these workers understood the power of standing together. They asked thoughtful questions, supported one another throughout the process, and stayed focused on building a stronger future where they have a real voice at work.”

The campaign began with strong support from heavy equipment operators, whose involvement encouraged administrative staff to participate in discussions about forming a union. Despite challenges including an employer-contested petition and delays caused by a temporary National Labor Relations Board closure, the group maintained solidarity through meetings and ongoing conversations.

With their election of shop stewards and a bargaining committee complete, the workers are preparing for negotiations with Akima management. IAM Western Territory General Vice President Robert “Bobby” Martinez said, “This organizing victory shows what is possible when working people come together and demand respect on the job. We are proud to welcome these workers into the IAM family and look forward to standing with them as they negotiate a contract that reflects their value and the important work they perform.”

IAM District W24 President Brandon Bryant added, “When workers unite, they gain the power to raise standards on the job. Our union is proud to support these members as they move forward.”

The outcome at Joint Base Lewis-McChord may encourage other groups of workers seeking similar representation or improvements in workplace conditions.
