Members of the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers (IAM) District 776 came together on March 24 to provide food and resources to unhoused individuals in the Fort Worth community. The event took place even as many union members are preparing for upcoming contract negotiations.
The annual District 776 Homeless Drive, now in its third year, is designed to unite union members in collecting and distributing essential items for those in need. The effort received additional support from Taylor Rehmet, a District 776 member who now serves as a Texas State Senator.
Eric Meriwether, Business Representative for District 776, said the commitment to service stems from lessons learned within the union. “Our retired President Paul Black shared something with me during his retirement party that I carry with me always: Never forget where you come from,” Meriwether said. “I’ve always lived by that, and it guides everything I do for our members and our community.”
After completing their outreach efforts, participants celebrated with a Texas barbecue and expressed optimism about continuing the tradition next year.
District leaders say events like this help maintain strong ties between IAM locals and their communities during times of need.
