The International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers held its General Secretary-Treasurer International Auditors Conference in Orange Beach, Ala., on May 1. The event brought together IAM International Auditors from Locals and Districts across the United States and Canada to share strategies, coordinate efforts, and enhance support for union members.

The conference focused on the importance of auditors in protecting union members’ dues, promoting transparency, and maintaining high standards of financial accountability throughout the organization. Participants attended workshops, engaged in discussions, and reviewed real-world case studies to identify best practices for strengthening financial oversight at all levels.

International Auditors work as an extension of the General Secretary-Treasurer’s Office. They collaborate closely with Local and District Secretary-Treasurers to safeguard union resources while ensuring compliance with Department of Labor regulations, Internal Revenue Service rules, and IAM’s own financial policies. Their efforts are aimed at reinforcing accountability within the union structure.

“This conference is about making sure we are giving our International Auditors the tools, training, and support they need to succeed in a constantly evolving financial landscape,” said IAM General Secretary-Treasurer Dora Cervantes. “Our members trust us to protect their dues and operate with transparency, and that responsibility starts with the strong, consistent work of our auditing team.”

Assistant Secretary to the General Secretary-Treasurer Paul Kendall said: “Our auditors are often the first line of defense when it comes to maintaining financial integrity across our union. By coming together, sharing experiences, and aligning on best practices, we strengthen our ability to support Districts and Locals and ensure accountability at every level.”

Special Assistant Bryan Pinette added: “The work International Auditors do goes beyond numbers – it’s about protecting the foundation of our union. This conference gives us the chance to connect, problem-solve, and continue building a system that works for our members and their future.”

As IAM continues adapting to meet its membership’s needs, leaders say that auditors will remain essential for ensuring responsible management of funds.
