The IAM Union Local 2198 Young Workers Committee, in partnership with the Community Service Committee, organized a winter blanket drive to assist individuals experiencing homelessness in Houston. The initiative resulted in the collection of 30 bags containing warm blankets, beanies, gloves, and emergency blankets ahead of the winter season. All items were donated by members of IAM Local 2198.

Young Workers Chairperson Quintarius Oliver led the effort along with committee members Cora Walker and Eva Brooks. The Community Service Committee was represented by Chairperson Albert Harmason and members Maria Caban and Tamisha Hodges.

The Young Workers Committee has been involved in several community service projects throughout Houston. Recently, they hosted their first Dora Cervantes Bowling Fundraiser. This event brought together union members, families, and supporters for a day of activities. Proceeds from the fundraiser supported Guide Dogs of America | Tender Loving Canines to help provide free services to those in need.

Additionally, the committee partnered with Communities in Schools at Elsik High School to donate more than 50 backpacks filled with supplies to students before the school year began.

“This is a powerful example of union values in action,” said IAM Union Air Transport Territory General Vice President Richie Johnsen. “Local 2198’s Young Workers are stepping up to lead with compassion, proving that our union’s commitment to service extends well beyond the job.”

IAM Union Local 2198 President Enrique Bojórquez highlighted the involvement of young members: “Our Young Workers are setting the standard for what it means to be engaged, active union members,” Bojórquez said. “From fundraising to hands-on service, they continue to show up for both our community and our union.”

Dee Colbert, IAM Women’s and Young Workers Director, commented on the committee’s work: “IAM Young Workers are committed to service, leadership and building stronger communities,” Colbert said. “The work being done by Local 2198’s Young Workers Committee in Houston reflects the future of our union. IAM Young Workers are driven, compassionate and community-focused.”

Through these efforts, IAM Local 2198’s younger members aim to strengthen their local community while promoting union values.
