The International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers (IAM) New Mexico State Council convened in Ruidoso, New Mexico, for a weekend focused on union organizing, legislative action, and improved communication among local unions. The event brought together IAM members from across the state to discuss strategies to strengthen the union’s influence in workplaces and communities.

John Dyrcz, President of the IAM New Mexico State Council and a member of Local 794, opened the meeting by emphasizing the need for collaboration and dedication to the labor movement. “Our state council meeting went great,” Dyrcz said. “Over the past two days, we laid down a strong foundation for the 2026 election cycle and updated our bylaws to make sure we have solid ground for picking labor-friendly candidates and next year’s elections. I want to see continued participation, and I hope some new individuals will volunteer to give their time and talents to state council leadership. My message for our delegates is to stay engaged, activate, agitate, and organize.”

Dora Cervantes, IAM General Secretary-Treasurer, provided an update on the state of the union, highlighting recent growth, contract wins, and national campaigns that support workers’ rights. Cervantes encouraged delegates to continue building on the organization’s record of advocacy.

Robert “Bobby” Martinez, IAM Western Territory General Vice President, addressed the delegates about challenges facing federal employees and contract workers. He underscored the IAM’s efforts to protect fair pay, benefits, and workplace protections.

Richie Johnsen, IAM Air Transport Territory General Vice President, discussed the union’s campaigns in the air transport sector and provided updates on negotiations with airline carriers. He noted that progress in one area benefits the entire organization.

Josh Hartford, Special Assistant to the IAM International President, spoke about Local 331’s first participation in the state council meeting and outlined current issues in the rail industry. Hartford reported on how the IAM Rail Division continues to advocate for its members.

Other speakers included Loren Almeroth, Assistant Legislative and Political Director, and DeLane Adams, Assistant Communications Director. The weekend featured discussions on leadership development and political advocacy, with an emphasis on building alliances with supportive elected officials and preparing for upcoming elections.

Delegates concluded the meeting by reaffirming their commitment to building union strength across New Mexico through solidarity and action. The council’s officers include President John Dyrcz (Local 794), First Vice President Art Pardo (Local 2515), Second Vice President Virgil Thompson (Local 794), Secretary Treasurer Tina Davis (Local 794), and Trustees Lynnelle Jimenez (Local 1635), Bud Duryea (Local 2515), and Ron More (Local 2515).

The council represents locals from Albuquerque, Alamogordo, and Belen, including members working in the Western Territory, Southwest Airlines, and the rail division.
