IAM Western Territory General Vice President Robert “Bobby” Martinez recently visited members of IAM Local 1998 in Hawaii. The visit highlighted the important role that Local 1998 plays within the union’s Western Territory and its contributions to national security and defense.

Local 1998, which was established in 1951, has a long history of representing workers in Hawaii. For over seventy years, it has supported union efforts in the region and contributed to the stability and growth of the Western Territory. The local’s continued presence shows the ongoing need for strong union representation and reflects the dedication of its members.

“Our Hawaiian members play a pivotal role in our union,” said GVP Martinez. “Their solidarity through cultural diversity is empowering and the role our members play in the name of national defense is felt from coast to coast.”

Martinez emphasized that Hawaii’s geographic location makes Local 1998 especially significant both economically and nationally. Members are involved in industries that are essential to infrastructure and defense, making their work vital not only locally but also on a national level. He noted that their contributions affect national security and support broader defense operations across the country.

Many members of Local 1998 are directly involved with supporting national defense operations through their skills and professionalism, helping ensure operational readiness. Martinez acknowledged their substantial responsibilities and stressed that strong union representation is necessary to protect their rights, secure fair contracts, and maintain safe working conditions.

The visit also underscored the diversity among Local 1998’s membership, reflecting Hawaii’s multicultural community. Martinez described this diversity as a strength for both IAM and its Western Territory: “Their solidarity through cultural diversity is empowering.” He said unity among people from different backgrounds supports solidarity within IAM.

During his time in Hawaii, Martinez met with members and local leaders to discuss priorities, listen to concerns, and plan future actions. His visit demonstrated IAM’s commitment to maintaining close ties with locals throughout its territory.
