Representatives from the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers (IAM) and the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers (IBEW) recently gathered at the William W. Winpisinger Education and Technology Center to prepare for upcoming contract negotiations with GE Appliances. The Joint Bargaining Committee (JBC), which also includes members from UA and UE, represents unionized service technicians who work in service vans across the United States.
The negotiation preparation program lasted several days and focused on strategic training, research analysis, and coordinated bargaining among multiple unions. The goal was to ensure that all JBC unions are united and well-prepared as they approach negotiations with GE Appliances, headquartered in Louisville, Kentucky.
During the program, participants reviewed contract language, developed proposals, conducted costing exercises, and planned communication strategies. There was a strong focus on engaging union members so that their priorities would be reflected during bargaining.
Committees from different locals worked together to identify shared challenges and exchange best practices. Their efforts centered on protecting wages and benefits, improving job security, and strengthening workplace protections.
Craig Norman, IAM Union Collective Bargaining Director, stated: “This training gives our negotiating committees the tools and confidence they need to fight for the best possible agreement. Preparation is power, and when we walk into negotiations, we do so with a clear strategy and the full strength of our membership behind us.”
