Members of the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers (IAM) from across Missouri gathered in Jefferson City for the IAM Missouri State Council, according to an April 7 announcement. The event brought together union members focused on supporting working families and defending workers’ rights.
The gathering is significant as it addressed ongoing efforts by some groups to change Missouri’s referendum process. According to participants, these changes could make it easier for corporate interests to advance “right-to-work” laws, which they say would weaken unions and lower wages.
During the conference, IAM members visited the Capitol to lobby elected officials about key issues affecting working families. These included opposition to paycheck deception bills, support for workforce development initiatives, advocating for a higher minimum wage, and resisting attempts to relax child labor protections.
Attendees received updates from various branches within the IAM organization—including the International President’s Office, Midwest Territory leadership, Political and Legislative Department, and Communications Department—to ensure coordinated action moving forward. The event also promoted solidarity with other unions affiliated with the Missouri AFL-CIO.
Several bipartisan legislators spoke at the conference in support of pro-worker policies. Speakers included Senate Democratic Leader Doug Beck; State Representatives Keri Ingle, Betsy Fogle, Stephen Webber, David Casteel, Jeff Amato; and State Senator Karla May. Organizers expressed appreciation for DeWitt Darity (President), Dwight Terry (Secretary-Treasurer), and other Executive Board members of the Missouri State Council for their roles in organizing the meeting.
The broader impact of this gathering may be seen as part of ongoing efforts by labor organizations in Missouri to influence state policy on worker protections.
