IAM union members at Lufthansa Technik Puerto Rico have voted to maintain their union representation, rejecting a decertification effort backed by the National Right to Work Legal Defense Foundation. The vote is seen as a significant development for technicians at the company’s Aguadilla facility, who have been seeking progress in contract negotiations that have stalled for nearly three years.
The decertification attempt follows ongoing delays in bargaining between workers and management. In May 2022, more than 200 mechanics and related employees at Lufthansa Technik Puerto Rico joined the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers (IAM) to pursue better working conditions and job security. However, contract talks have faced repeated setbacks, leading the IAM in 2023 to request intervention from the National Mediation Board as a federal mediator. Verdi, a German union representing Lufthansa employees in Europe, has also called on parent company Lufthansa AG to help resolve the dispute.
Lufthansa Technik Puerto Rico has not agreed to terms recognizing workers’ contributions or improving quality of life despite continued operations and profits.
“IAM International President Brian Bryant stated, ‘Lufthansa Technik must now come to the table ready to negotiate a contract that honors these workers’ skills and contributions. The workers have spoken loudly and clearly: they want respect, they want stability, and they want a fair contract. The IAM will not rest until they get the contract they deserve.’”
Craig Martin, IAM Southern Territory General Vice President said, “This vote is a powerful testament to what solidarity can achieve. Lufthansa Technik workers stood together against outside interference and made it clear that they want a strong union fighting for them at the table. Now it’s time for the company to respect that mandate and bargain in good faith.”
IAM Air Transport Territory General Vice President Richie Johnsen added, “Our members in Puerto Rico showed tremendous resolve in the face of intimidation and delay tactics. They know their worth, and they know that union representation is the path to better wages, safer working conditions, and a more secure future. Their unity is inspiring, and the IAM is with them every step of the way.”
Ilianalyn Delgado, an aircraft mechanic at Lufthansa Technik Puerto Rico said, “We stayed united because we know what we bring to this company. We keep these aircraft flying safely. We deserve respect, a voice on the job, and a contract that reflects our work. This vote shows we’re not backing down.”
The IAM urges Lufthansa Technik Puerto Rico management to end stalling tactics and return to negotiations prepared for serious discussion about reaching an agreement.
