The International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers (IAM Union) has expressed support for communities in Minnesota amid concerns over government actions that the union says threaten civil and constitutional rights.

In a message to its members, IAM Union leadership addressed recent events in Minnesota, describing them as “a serious test of our democracy and our collective commitment to the Constitution.” The statement continued: “When government authority is used to intimidate communities, suppress dissent, or detain people without due process, the labor movement has a responsibility to speak with clarity and purpose.”

The union emphasized its solidarity with Minnesotans, particularly union members and working families advocating for accountability. “No worker should fear being targeted for speaking out, protesting peacefully, or simply existing in their community,” the message stated.

IAM Union said it is aligning with broader labor efforts to oppose what it described as unconstitutional detentions and targeting of individuals regardless of immigration status. The organization stressed that its actions would remain consistent with collective bargaining agreements to protect workers’ jobs and contracts.

“The IAM Union has always believed that dignity on the job and dignity in our communities are inseparable. Working people build this country, sustain its economy, and keep it moving every day. When we stand together with discipline and unity, we can demand justice while safeguarding one another,” the statement read.

Members were encouraged to show support by sharing statements from the Minnesota AFL-CIO on social media, participating in solidarity actions such as wearing blue on January 23rd and posting photos using #MNAFLCIO, placing candles in windows, holding faith vigils, or writing letters to corporations based in Minnesota. The union also called on members to contact Congress regarding oversight of ICE.

The letter was signed by Brian Bryant, International President of IAM Union.
