Ashanda R. Esdaille, MD, a urologic oncologist at the Georgia Cancer Center at Augusta University and assistant professor in the Department of Urology at the Medical College of Georgia, has been named the recipient of the 2025 Health Equity Fellowship by the Urology Care Foundation.
The Health Equity Fellowship is a two-year program designed for early-career urologists interested in humanitarian work and improving care for underserved communities. The fellowship combines education, advocacy, and community engagement.
“I am truly honored to be selected for this fellowship, which will equip me with the tools to engage more deeply with communities, forge meaningful partnerships and strengthen my ability to serve marginalized and minoritized populations,” Esdaille said. “This opportunity will enhance my commitment to community-based education initiatives and participatory research, ensuring that the voices of underserved communities are centered in advancing equitable cancer care and research.”
Esdaille will partner with Temple University’s Center for Health Justice and Urban Bioethics during her fellowship. She will complete a year of coursework on topics such as community engagement, social sciences, and bioethics before undertaking a capstone project focused on sustainable projects that improve access to urologic care.
Her clinical focus includes prostate, kidney, and bladder cancers. Her main interest is in prostate cancer disparities and developing community-driven programs like HEALCARE—a nutrition education initiative aimed at promoting cancer equity. The fellowship will provide mentorship and resources for Esdaille to expand HEALCARE and further her research on nutrition, structural inequities, and prostate cancer outcomes.
“We are proud of Dr. Esdaille’s outstanding achievement and recognition of the impact her efforts bring to our patients and community,” said Martha K. Terris, MD, Witherington Distinguished Chair in the Department of Urology at MCG.
The Urology Care Foundation is affiliated with the American Urological Association. It supports global improvement in urological care through funding research, clinical education initiatives, patient education programs, and humanitarian projects.
