IAM General Secretary-Treasurer Dora Cervantes has appointed Stephen Stewart, a longtime member of IAM Local S6, as an International Auditor for the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers (IAM), effective October 1, 2025. In his new role, Stewart will oversee financial practices for IAM Districts and Locals across several northeastern states including Maine, New Hampshire, Massachusetts, Vermont, Connecticut, Rhode Island, and New York.
“Stephen Stewart has consistently demonstrated the highest level of integrity, dedication, and skill in every role he’s held in our union,” said IAM General Secretary-Treasurer Dora Cervantes. “His leadership at Local S6 and District 4 has shown that he understands the responsibility of financial stewardship and the importance of transparency to our members. I have no doubt he will excel as an International Auditor and serve our membership with distinction.”
Stewart joined IAM Local S6 at Bath Iron Works in 2011. Since 2020, he has served as Local S6 Secretary-Treasurer. He has also participated on the Legislative Committee and was part of the Negotiating Committee in 2023. That year he was elected Recording Secretary of District 4 where he provided oversight on finances and organizational matters.
“Stephen’s experience in financial oversight, negotiations, and legislative advocacy gives him a well-rounded perspective that will be invaluable in his new role,” said IAM Assistant Secretary Paul Kendall. “He knows what it takes to keep our Locals strong, accountable, and member-focused.”
Stewart’s involvement extends beyond local roles; he has represented members as a delegate to organizations such as the Maine Machinists Council, New England Machinists Council, A. Philip Randolph Institute, Maine AFL-CIO, and at the 2024 IAM International Convention. He has also served on Education and Organizing Committees while advocating legislatively for working families in Maine.
“Stephen has an incredibly strong commitment to our members,” said Bryan Pinette, IAM Special Assistant to the General Secretary-Treasurer. “His appointment as International Auditor is well deserved, and I’m confident he will be a tremendous asset to our team.”
Stewart graduated from Lake Region High School in Naples, Maine before attending Bryant College. He received technical training through the Maine Maritime Apprenticeship Program at Bath Iron Works and completed multiple IAM training programs focused on leadership and finance.
With experience spanning financial management within unions as well as negotiation skills developed through committee work at both local and district levels—and additional education—Stewart is expected to bring valuable expertise to his new position within the IAM International Auditors team.
