The U.S. Census Bureau released new summary statistics and data tables for the 2025 Annual Survey of Public Employment & Payroll (ASPEP) on April 16. The release offers detailed information about state and local government employment across the United States.

The ASPEP survey is an important resource for federal, state, and local governments, as well as education and research organizations. It provides comprehensive data that can be used to compare state and local government employment levels and analyze activities such as the development of the government component of gross domestic product.

According to the Census Bureau, the survey includes figures on full- and part-time employment, full-time equivalent positions, and gross monthly payrolls for March 2025 by various governmental functions such as financial administration, other administrative roles, highways, and air transportation. The newly released materials also include an individual unit file containing all data items by code within ASPEP. This file presents responses at the individual governmental unit level along with descriptive information.

In addition to publishing new data for 2025, revised tables for both 2023 and 2024 were made available. A graphic highlighting public sector employment per 10,000 people in selected states for 2025 was also published to show leading functions within state and local governments during that year.

More details about these datasets can be found at www.census.gov/programs-surveys/apes/data.html.
