The U.S. Census Bureau has released preliminary data from the Annual Integrated Economic Survey (AIES), offering a new source of national and regional economic information. The AIES is intended to consolidate seven separate annual business surveys into one, providing annual statistics on business revenues, expenses, and assets.

According to the Census Bureau, “The AIES is one of the Census Bureau’s newest surveys, designed to replace and integrate seven different annual business surveys into a single survey. AIES data can be used to track economic trends, assess industry performance, support policy development, and inform economic planning, resource allocation, and market research.”

The 2023 estimates cover select industries at national, regional, and divisional levels using two- and three-digit North American Industry Classification System (NAICS) codes. Final estimates with more detailed breakdowns are expected in the fall.

In the Northeast region last year, the Health Care and Social Assistance sector employed 5 million people with an annual payroll of $302.4 billion. The Finance and Insurance sector reported $1.8 trillion in revenue.

For the Midwest region in 2023, manufacturing jobs totaled 4 million employees. Retail trade generated $1.4 trillion in revenue while education services had a total payroll of $4.9 billion.

In the South region, professional services produced nearly $1 trillion in revenue. Retail trade employed 6.8 million people with an annual payroll of $235.8 billion.

The West saw 1.4 million employees working in information-related fields while accommodation and food services brought in $367.1 billion in revenue with an annual payroll of $110.7 billion.

More details about sampling variability can be found on the AIES First Look table page; disclosure avoidance procedures are described within the 2023 AIES Methodology.
